Music laid the foundation for Atlanta based indie folk/pop sister duo Aj x Kay’s tight knit bond as sisters and creatives. Aleigha Johnson and Kayleigh Johnson a dynamic duo long established from early childhood later went on to become a duo unmatched with a cutting edge unique to their sisterhood. Aj (Aleigha) paved the groundwork for the sisters’ careers at only 8 years old when she began learning guitar and just a couple years later Kay (Kayleigh) began learning drums. We know what you’re thinking “shocker the girls aren’t twins!” Throughout their childhood they played countless hours of music in their parents’ basement in a small town just an hour south of Atlanta. Aj began seriously songwriting at the age of 17. Festivals/Fairs quickly became the sisters’ stomping grounds during their teen years catching the eyes of audiences under a different band name from 2014-2017.
The Sisters’ Roots:
Film made its way into the sisters’ lives in 2021 upon shooting Further than 19, their first ever documentary/short, encompassing a glimpse into the global disconnect caused during Covid-19. Following jumping in head first into a creative journey that was rather unexpected, this enabled the duo to get connected in the film/tv industry working for networks such as Netflix, Paramount Plus and Warner Bros. The sisters largely credit their film success to working on Netflix Sweet Magnolias briefly as Featured Background for season 2, summer 2021 and Stand-in/Featured Background for the run of season 3, summer-fall 2022. (*here’s a secret, you can actually spot the duo in season 2 Ep. 10 and bits and pieces throughout season 3)
Sweet Magnolias opened the door to a world of connections amidst film/tv enabling Aj to further her journey in screenwriting and enabling Kay to venture into camera department jobs.
Since 2021, the duo has been on the voyage of marrying the two worlds between the music and film industry forming a creative collective and ultimately expanding Aj x Kay. Aj takes on roles of writing for screen, songwriting, music production, directing, acting, set design and styling. Kay takes on the roles of directing, camera operating, assisting in writing for screen or song, editing films + editorial photos and dabbles in a bit of acting.
Music had always been their first love,
but stepping away for a couple years became mandatory after walking away from a music deal gone wrong. Despite losing the very thing they loved most, the sisters journeyed on and in August of 2020 began sharing a few covers just for fun on Instagram as Aj x Kay. The past few years marked their journey back to music and coupling hardship with navigating life in their 20’s, enabled new songs to emerge. The sisters currently have been in studio producing an EP set to be released for 2024 following their debut single “December Flowers” which hit all platforms 12/29/23.
